Riverbend Residence sits along the banks of the South Toe River, on land that holds deep personal significance for its owners, returning them to the landscape of their childhood. As they transition into retirement, they envisioned a home that supports both active engagement with the outdoors and long-term independent living.

The design prioritizes living within the landscape rather than placing a house as an object upon it. Spaces are intentionally connected to the outdoors, encouraging daily interaction with the river, fresh air, changing seasons, and the mountain environment. The clients’ relationship with the land became the organizing principle of the architecture.
The house stretches low across the site, framing views of the river valley and evening light. A single-story plan minimizes the building’s presence while supporting accessibility. Bedroom suites and support spaces sit beneath a low roof, while the living areas rise to capture daylight, natural ventilation, and expansive views.
Outdoor spaces shape the organization of the home. A large folding door extends the main living area onto a screened porch with motorized screens, allowing the house to open fully to the elements. Additional porches, terraces, and patios provide varied opportunities for outdoor living, while large windows maintain a constant connection to the landscape.
Muted exterior tones echo river stone and tree bark, and a restrained interior palette allows the changing colors of the forest to remain the visual focus. The result is a home that fosters an enduring relationship with the land through an evolving stage of life.
