Camp Tall Trees

Camp Tall Trees

Location: Saluda, NC
Type: New Construction

Camp Tall Trees is a custom residence in Saluda, North Carolina that embraces the beauty of the surrounding land while also reflecting the personalities and pursuits of its owners. The mid-century inspired home blends architecture with landscape, function and beauty.

Project Team

Our approach to designing this home was informed by the relationship between the site and the lake below. The form settles against the steep hillside overlooking the water with rich tones of green and tan that mirror the surrounding landscape. Functionality and efficiency informed the layout. Bedrooms and primary living spaces occupy the upper level and the lower level features spaces for hobbies, including a craft room, gym and garage to hide away biking or outdoor gear. The two story home has dual-level car access so it’s easy to unload groceries at the front door and convenient to drop off gear to the lower level.

The arrival sequence ushers guests through a garden space to reach the front door, which sets up an axial view through the house to the lake. The interiors celebrate biophilic design with an abundance of plants and expansive windows. The main living area is anchored by a ceramic wood stove that unites the living and kitchen into one inviting space. The color palette features rich, deep tones of green and brown that echo the colors of the surrounding landscape.

Supporting Local Artists

The mid-century inspired design is a welcoming backdrop to its maximalist interiors. A wide-ranging collection of art, collectibles and treasures tell a story of the owners’ history.

Our clients have roots in both Western North Carolina and Louisville and many pieces of artwork featured in their home from artists from these locations. Selected featured artists include:

This project holds a special significance, as the family are second-generation clients. One of our studio’s former projects was a home in Saluda for the owner’s parents in the early 1990s. This new home carries forward a sense of legacy with many of the pieces coming from the original family house, creating a connection between different eras of the family’s life.
