Spruce Ridge Cabin Earns 2025 Matsumoto Prize

2025 Matsumoto Prize Altura Architects

We are delighted to announce that Spruce Ridge Cabin received 2nd Place in this year’s Matsumoto Prize. This award celebrates the finest modern residential architecture in North Carolina. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the jury and to NC Modernist for hosting.

We received this award at a ceremony, held at Leland Little Auctions in Hillsborough. It was a memorable evening, and we were inspired by the diverse range of projects presented, each showcasing unique design philosophies and innovative techniques. Congratulations to the other winners for their outstanding projects, including our fellow Western North Carolina designers, Rusafova Markulis. We are truly honored to have received this recognition and to be part of such a vibrant community of architects and designers.

About Spruce Ridge Cabin

Hidden within a dense forest at nearly 6,000 feet, the Spruce Ridge Cabin provides an immersive experience in nature. The high elevation creates a micro climate and habitat that supports rare species of flora and fauna. Paramount to the design process was to minimize the impact on this fragile ecosystem. Modest in appearance and reflective of the surrounding nature, the home has a minimal footprint with two cantilevered forms clad in dark cedar. A foot bridge leading to the main entry provides a physical and emotional transition into nature.
