Casa Pampa

Casa Pampa sits at the south edge of a knoll overlooking the mountains of Fairview, NC. Our clients came to us with a desire for their home to fit naturally into the site and emphasize connections to multiple outdoor spaces. The form of the home bends around the knoll with two intersecting bar volumes defining the public and private spaces with indoor and outdoor spaces oriented to the south and west views.

An arrival courtyard at the top of the knoll is created by the open carport that is tucked into a rhododendron thicket on the north side of the site. The low lying rooflines of the structures minimize the visual impact on the mountainside, while a single pitched roof rises over the glass entry to create a welcoming arrival. The interior walls of the foyer are clad in exterior siding, further emphasizing the public and private wings as separate volumes.
Originally from Argentina, and with a great love for asado culture, our clients spend time with their family around the outdoor wood fired grill and pizza oven. The cooking and eating rituals are very important to their lifestyle so the home’s design needed to prioritize the daily flow of preparing meals. The main dinner meal often takes place around or after sunset so the outdoor cooking and living spaces are located to take advantage of sunset views.
Three sets of large sliding doors are featured at the main living spaces and open the rooms to the outdoors on two sides. A cantilevered balcony at the south side provides circulation through the indoor and outdoors spaces and views to the southern mountains. The west doors connect the kitchen and dining area to the outdoor asado and pizza oven, creating an ease of flow for cooking, eating and outdoor living.
